What can you use to clean artificial grass?

While materials and installation may very, most artificial grass responds the same to gentle cleaning methods. You can use specialized cleaning products, but there are a number of natural and homemade alternatives to choose from to keep your costs down.

Mix small amounts of natural soap and water in a spray bottle and apply to affected areas. After it sets in, use a soft brush or sponge to gently rub the dirty area and wash off with water. Alternatively, a 1:1 solution of distilled white vinegar and water can be used. If your lawn is really dirty, add dish detergent to hot water and wash off after the soap has time to soak in. We recommend a 3-5% detergent/soap mixture with water when making your own cleaner.

Avoid the use of harsh chemicals, as they could damage the fibers of your artificial grass. When in doubt, test the cleaner on a small, out-of-sight patch first. It’s best not to pressure wash or vacuum your turf, as these can be too intense and potentially damage it.

How do I remove stains from fake grass?

Mixing about 5% dish detergent with very hot water and allowing it to soak into the grass is usually a good start. Brushing the grass with a sponge, dish brush, or the edge of a dull butter knife helps break up stains, but take care not to brush too hard as that could damage the fibers.

If the stain is caused by cooking oil, engine oil, sunscreen, paint, or nail polish, rub the stain with white vinegar using a sponge or washcloth.

How do I stop my artificial grass from smelling?

Some fake grass is constructed specifically with pets in mind, like our quick-draining, stain and odor-fighting K9Grass. If you have turf from another manufacturer, have no fear! Washing the area after your pet goes to the bathroom with water is enough for some, but if the smell persists, we have options.

After removing feces from your turf with a plastic bag or poop scooper, apply a gentle cleansing solution and scrub gently. This should remove any odor present, and disinfect the bacteria that cause odors. If an odor still sticks around, we’ve had success with putting baking soda on the area and allowing it to soak up the smell for several minutes, then cleaning per usual with soap and water.

Weekly spray downs with the hose should keep smells at bay and keep your lawn looking and smelling fresh.

How do you sweep artificial grass?

When the texture and appearance of your artificial grass gets jumbled up due to cleaning, pressure, or damage, you may need to sweep it to restore its appearance.

After raking the grass with a flexible, plastic garden rake to remove leaves, twigs, and other debris, take a stiff broom across the lawn in a criss-cross pattern to return the fibers to their upright position. Make sure not to use anything metal, or tools with overly stiff bristles, as they’ll potentially damage your lawn.

Leaf blowers are a great two-in-one tool for maintenance, as they’ll remove debris and also reset the orientation of the blades of your lawn.
